Dog parks are a great way to allow your dog to socialize with other dogs. Letting your dog interact with other dogs under your supervision is very helpful in taming your dog’s wariness towards other dogs that he may meet while walking. Allowing him to get used to meeting strange dogs in a setting that you control will alleviate his anxiety about meeting new dogs.

Always keep an eye on your dog at the dog park. Don’t allow yourself to get distracted by chatting with other owners. By the time you realize what your dog is doing, it may already be too late to stop a fight from breaking out.

Keep a calm demeanor while introducing your dog to other dogs, even if you are nervous about what will happen. Your dog will naturally pick up on your calmness, helping to reduce his anxiety level. It can be stressful letting your dog interact with other dogs when you don’t know if the other dog has aggression problems, or if you know or suspect your own dog tends to be aggressive towards other dogs. Showing tension via your body language will just cause your dog to be tense in kind. Keeping calm will help your dog understand that meeting new dogs can be a positive experience and that he doesn’t have to be on his guard all the time.

Select a dog park that attracts courteous owners. If other owners don’t pick up after their dogs, don’t watch their dogs while they’re at the park, or don’t have well-behaved dogs, you should consider going to another dog park where the crowd is more conducive to socializing your dog. Neglectful owners are more likely to ignore the behavioral issues their dogs have, which will make going to that dog park more dangerous for your dog.

Go to the dog park at a time when it isn’t especially crowded, especially when you are first taking your dog to the dog park. If there are too many dogs around or too many humans around, your dog may become overwhelmed by all the new sights and smells. Taking him at a time when there are less people and fewer dogs at the dog park will allow him to get more used to the idea of socializing with other dogs at a slower pace. Another bad sign is if there are many more dogs there than there are people, as this means that owners may be distracted and not able to carefully watch all of their dogs. This will lead to an increased chance of fights and other negative incidents for your dog.

If you think that a dog fight may be brewing, quickly distract your dog as much as possible. You may consider bringing a loud whistle in order to momentarily distract your dog so that you can get his attention and take it off the other dog. What sometimes seems like it could end in a fight to humans is perfectly fine for dogs, so you should take some care in deciding whether or not to break things up.Article provided by Crissi Perry of Oh My Dog Supplies, search for current discounts on dog fetch toys online.

The Need For Dog Wheelchairs
By Charles M Johnson

Being adjustable and easy to use for rehabilitative purposes, dog wheelchairs have become a godsend for disabled mutts. You can get adjustable wheelchairs for your dog, or even order a customized wheelchair to be made for your beloved pet. The adjustable dog carts are far better because they can be adjusted for a perfect fit and can be used on another pet if your dog no longer needs it.

Though it may sound strange, dog wheelchairs are a reality. When you think wheelchairs, the thing that occurs first in your minds is old or disabled. But actually, wheelchairs for canines help your favorite pet recover from an accident, surgery or related ailments. They are also designed to help wounded or handicapped pets. As the saying goes, a dog is man’s best friend. They are very endearing and social animals. Thus, many owners look for pet mobility aids for their hurt or handicapped pets.

Yet, sadly, dogs are not invincible. They are injured sometimes. At times, this leads them to being physically disabled. It is not unusual for an aged, wounded, or disabled dog to lose the use or mobility of their back legs. Nevertheless, in such situations, it does not have to be the end of the dog’s life. Dog wheelchairs or dog carts can give the dog freedom, by restoring a wholesome and healthy life.

Dog wheelchairs are a great way to assist them in regaining their usual, healthy and happy life. A wheelchair can help your dog run and play yet again, and get the work out it needs. It is made to help dogs with hip and leg troubles like hip dysplasia, neurological ailments, degenerative myelopathy, surgical recuperation, and more.

The majority of handicapped dogs who need dog wheelchairs have arthritis, spinal cord problems, paralysis, soreness, slipped disc, or hip dislocations. Some of the most common causes why dogs need wheelchairs are hip dysplasia, disc diseases, ruptured discs, spinal cord injuries, fractured back, arthritis, chronic leg weakness, front and back leg amputation, paralysis, neurological diseases. Neurological afflictions, wounds and diseases can bring about paraplegia or hind limb paresis in dogs. Dogs afflicted by these conditions, as well as those recuperating from hind limb operations, may gain a lot by using dog wheelchairs. Research has revealed that canines using wheelchairs can largely improve the wellbeing and quality of the dog’s life, in addition to assisting the caregivers.

Having dog wheelchairs personalized for your dog is the best way to make sure that the dog is given the maximum assistance and comfort. A custom-made wheelchair will be sized to fit your dog impeccably and will also make up for the gender of your dog. It can have the color of your choice too.

Being, adjustable and easy to use for rehabilitative purposes, dog wheelchairs have become a godsend for disabled dogs. They have brought back hope and happiness in the lives of the wounded and handicapped dogs and their owners.

Or, at least, they have heard about these same difficulties. It happens whenever a sweet, adorable bundle of fur grows up without learning the basics. Suddenly, this sweet creature is a destructive, mouthy, juvenile delinquent.

On the other hand, you could have just taken in a dog of dubious history. This is an older animal. It may have built-in insecurities and issues you do not know about. They soon manifest themselves. It may not be a pleasant experience.

There are several basic behavioral problems you and your dog may face. They range from barking to chewing to biting. Many have simple solutions. Others are more complex. In the following articles, we will consider some of the more common issues facing dog owners.

Barking

The very first thing you need to ask yourself is “Why?” Why is the dog barking so much? Is it behavioral? Is it the breed? Is it from any specific trigger mechanism?

You must remember that barking is one way a dog expresses him or herself. It is natural. It acts as a warning mechanism for its people. However, when purposeful barking evolves into constant yipping and yapping, you need to look at the rationale behind the behavior.

Some dogs exhibit this kind of misbehavior because they are bored. The dog could also be anxious, excited or wanting attention. A dog may also bark because, like some people, he or she simply likes the sound of their own voice. It is important you understand the why of the bark before you can work to correct the behavior.

There are various approaches to solving the issue of constant barking. It is easier to address if the dog is barking from boredom or anxiety. The solutions frequently boil down to the following:

Spend more time with your dog. Make sure it is quality time. Socialize, play and simply “hang out” with him or her. It may be he or she has been alone too often as everybody goes about their busy lives.

If you are very busy during the day and/or you need to spend time away from your dog, have someone come in. Have a neighbor or friend drop in. You can hire a dog walker or dog sitter to help out. This will reduce boredom and decrease anxiety. Your dog will receive stimulation. Your dog will realize someone will always be there for them.

Enroll your canine companion in doggy day care. This solves the boredom during the day. If you pick a qualified day care facility, your dog will have a great time. Doggy day cares are a good way for your pet to socialize and have fun. Moreover, if you drop off and pick up within a certain time frame, it reduces anxiety levels.

If you do not have the time, make it. Play, train and ensure your dog gets adequate exercise. This will wear him or her down. It will make your dog feel happy, content and reduce anxiety levels. If your dog is aware that, no matter what, you are coming home to walk and play with him or her, it helps reduce stress.

Train your dog. Enroll him or her in a training class. They will learn the commands of “Speak” and “Be Quite” or “Silence.” This will help them differentiate between the right and wrong times to vocalize.

If your dog is trying to get attention by barking, do not reward him or her.

Reward your dog for suitable barking. Always praise and give treats to the canine who barks when he or she should.

There are 2 other methods for controlling undesirable barking. Both are extreme. Both are cruel. Neither are recommended for use. Avoid anti-barking collars. They are inhumane. Also do not even listen to anyone who says the best way to controlling barking is to remove the vocal cords.

Camping is great fun to do with your dog no matter what time of the year it is. But in the summer there are some special considerations that you might not have as much in the cooler parts of the year. These things can cause your dog problems if not handled correctly.

Your dog needs to be up on all his vaccinations before your camping trip. Also this allows the vet to give him a checkup. A sick dog should not go on a trip with you. The pooch should also be on heartworm preventative since mosquitoes will be out in great numbers depending on where you are going camping. They are after all, the transmitter of the disease.

The flea and tick preventative you use should be applied about a week before camping if it is a top-spot type application. If you are using a spray put it on the dog before leaving home take this with you in case you need to reinforce the protection. Summer is a big time for fleas and ticks so please follow this information to protect your pet.

Another important thing to know when camping with your dog do not leave it alone in the camper with it all closed up and think the air conditioner will stay on. The electricity at the campgrounds can always go off at peak times. Also your air conditioner itself could malfunction. If you must leave your dog in your camper make sure there are windows and vents open for air and do not be gone long. A quick trip to the store is all it should be. A great solution is your dog’s very own dog camping crate; these are soft sided crates made from very durable material that are not easily torn with plenty of windows for ventilation.

If you are tent camping though you should never leave your dog unattended under any circumstances. You do not know what could happen. Strangers could come around and the dog could attack trying to protect or they might harm the dog in some way. Also wild animals could intrude and cause a problem. So keep your dog with you if you have to go off from the site.

Have its collar with rabies tag on the dog. Also have a leash with you. Most campgrounds require a leash be no longer than 6 feet long. This is long enough for the dog to romp while short enough for you to maintain control of him.

Take the dog’s normal food and dishes for it to eat from it will feel more at home. If you are tent camping store the food out of predators range like the other food you have brought. If camping with a camper keep your food stores inside to keep them safe. Make sure with it being so warm that your dog gets enough water to drink.

Teach the dog to be a good camper. This means it should not bark unless there is a very good reason. If your dog is too noisy you could be asked to leave the campground. This will spoil the good time you and your pooch could have.

Beware of any wildlife do not let your dog go snooping around the ducks, geese or other creatures it could come across camping. These creatures could attack your canine companion and hurt it. This especially goes for snakes if they are in the area. So be on watch and keep your dog safe from this danger and the other summer hazards that can be encountered while camping.Information provided by Sharon Harris of Oh My Dog Supplies, the top place to find dog collars & leashes online.

There are aspects of certain issues you need to address when your dog is a puppy. This will save you time and even money in the future. The basic problems of barking, biting, chewing and exhibiting aggressive or dominant behavior are common among many dog owners. Yet, these issues do have their solutions. Even older dogs can be trained or retrained to “behave.” With older canines, it may require more time and energy. You may also have to consult and hire a professional.

This is all part of being a responsible owner. This section looks at another common problem – failing to come when called.

Not coming When Called

The very first thing you need to discover is what works for your canine. This is true whether you have a puppy or a mature dog. What will motivate your dog to come back when you call? Is it a special dog treat? Is it praise? Is he or she happy with a scritch behind the ears, a hug or a body cuddle? Will a toy or a ball or some other object work? Find out what will draw him or her back, and you will have the tools to ensure the dog returns.

Do not stint on this.

It is very important to have your dog come back on command. If they do not actively recall, the dog may end up injured or dead. But, mind your approach. Teach him or her a positively reinforced recall. Reward the return. This is a win-win situation for you and your dog.

Food is often the favorite way to lure a dog back. Many are motivated by their stomach. You can start using treats or kibble as a training tool at a very early age. Play hide-and-seek with your pet. When they find you, he or she gets a treat. Move from playing hide and seek indoors to the yard outside. Here, you can let the dog off a leash, let them explore, then call him or her back.

Every time your dog responds, reward with a treat and praise.

You then expand to larger enclosed and safe areas. This includes dog parks, particularly leash-free parks. Allow the dog to investigate. Supervise their movements. At certain times, call him or her back. Reward, then let off to play again. Calling and releasing will encourage the dog to come back.

Some dogs learn more quickly than others. Several dogs, unfortunately, have had bad experiences regarding failure to return. When he or she has come back after disregarding the owner’s command for a while, punishment has resulted. This only discourages the canine from coming back at all. For this reason, NEVER punish a dog for a late return. Even if it is hours later, do not strike or yell or berate the animal. If you do have problems, attend an obedience class.

Conclusion

There are many possible snags along the path running from a puppy to a senior dog. If you want to alleviate the load on you and other dog owners, train your pet. Make sure he or she is versed in basic manners.Information written by Sharon Robertson of Oh My Dog Supplies, the top spot to buy unique dog collars online.

Nutrition is a vital aspect of a canine’s life. There are hundreds of dog food products on the market today each brand claiming they are they new and improved dog food, so which one shall you choose? Expert opinions are as varied as the type of foods we have mentioned and every single one claim he is the most qualified to know about the right things you should feed your dog. You have the final say. As the proud dog owner that you are you have to make a decision in the interest of your dog’s health. We are here to provide assistance in making the right responsible choice.

Becoming a responsible nutritionist

The Internet is home to many opinions most of which make an interesting read but not so many provide you with a practical solution to the nutrition of man’s best friend. The sources are not to be trusted most articles having been rewritten so many times that the information has been diluted and is in fact unreliable. The best method to reach you goals is to get some professional help by consulting a vet which will in turn introduce you to a nutritionist.

- The Holistic Commercial Diet

- Diets Prescribed by your Vet

- Economy and Generic Dog Food Brands

- Homemade Foods

Diets are available for your pet in both wet and dry food. You will need to consider which type suits your dog depending on his breed and to proceed with securing some proper food for your pet. You will find the necessary information by surfing the net.

The Label must be read at all times

All the pet food you plan to feed your animal must be approved by the AAFCO prior to him receiving it. The American Feed Control Officials is the most qualified to determine what assortments of foods are best for your house pet. The standards enforced by the AAFCO are present on each dog food label. The information on these labels is pretty straightforward but there may be cases where it may mislead you into choosing the wrong type especially if this is the first time you own a pet. The labels need to be in line with the AAFCO guidelines and you should search for the ones which state to have the highest quality human-grade ingredients. Other food types which are known to contain chemicals and preservatives are to be avoided at all times. Some ingredients to filter are corn, wheat and soy.

Ask for a specialized opinion

Having done some proper research will lead to you making a more qualified decision when it comes to the life and health of your pet. You should search for opinions from various breeders, dog trainers, veterinaries and even from groomers who have been dealing with the animals they love for a long time and can give you a lot of useful tips. You can find the right type of information and foods at the local pet store as well. If you are lucky the store will be qualified to market high-quality diets for you dog. All the sources presented above will help narrow the field when making a decision about how to feed your pet.

A Dog needs to have Choices

Until you decide what the proper course of action is when it comes to helping your furry friend have a great meal and in turn a healthy life experiment with the dog food. Several dog food companies are willing to give free food samples and you may test them to see which ones your dog loves. To make the transition a lot faster you will have to mix the old food with the new so the dog will adjust to the taste during the course of a few days. You should then proceed to increase the amount of the new food you place in his bowl and he will eat that kind exclusively in not time.

Consider the Long-term Effects

A dog will not enjoy the same type of food for prolonged periods of time. Just like a person he will require some variety in his diet. Using the same type of food on him may cause him some unpleasant allergies. Most people use commercial dog food so it is recommended that a dog’s diet be switched every 2 to 6 months to avoid causing him health problems. Rotating the food may be done by opting for different brands or changing the mix of the current formula. If your dog relies on a homemade diet then you should give him various cooked meals.

Many approaches to a dog’s training exist during our time and by choosing either one of them you won’t go wrong. Regardless of the training grounds you choose for your dog, be it at home or at a dog training center, both options are available and you will not regret the decision you will make. The dog should never remain unsupervised because there is the risk of him chewing down your furniture, clothes and making an overall mess of things. The best way to teach your dog potty training is by placing him in his dog crate before leaving the home so he may become accustomed to being alone and to hold when he has to go in order for him to do it in the right place.

There are people who don’t agree with this method of dog crating so when you make your decision you should take into account your own needs and the personality of your canine. The behavior change will certainly help the canine adjust to a clean and healthy life, without you having to worry about him all the time or wasting precious time cleaning the house you live in every single day. There are canines that comply with their master’s wishes and are more obedient therefore learning by the crating method does not affect their attitude one bit. There is one rule to keep in mind when crating your dog, he should never be placed in the crate as a form of punishment otherwise he will adopt this behavior all the time even when you are in the house and you will be unable to move him from that spot.

There are people who consider this method of dog training unacceptable and have adopted other means of enforcing their wishes upon their canines. Traditional methods are suitable with the only distinction that accidents are usually prone to happen while the owner is not home. A canine, just like a person will in some cases become frustrated from too much training and begin to express that anger by chewing everything in the surrounding environment. The crate method should be first tested on the canine to see if he approves and if he has given you the green light then you can adopt it.

Once the decision has been made the dog will have to be sufficiently old to be able to understand that you are placing him in his crate and there he should remain until your return. The crate should be positioned in the corner of the room, out of the regular house traffic route so the canine will not be disturbed. The dog should have some freedom as to when he may leave the crate while you are in the house. There are canines which love to be in a crate with bedding and they consider it quite comfortable.

Once your canine becomes accustomed to staying in the crate while you are absent from the house then you will manage to remain calm that your home possessions are as safe as you left them without the presence of any bite marks or scratches. When looking to purchase such a crate you should go for a plastic model because they make it easy for your home to remain clean while your canine benefits from great conditions and stays in hygienic conditions. There is the small danger of him being tempted to chew the crate if he is known to have had such habits in the past. If the canine adjusts to this method of being crated and he doesn’t develop any signs of aggressive behavior towards the crate you should be content that this specific method is working successfully.

After getting your dog and bringing him to his new home, there are many things you will have to do for him such as give him his food and take him for walks. Another important facet of caring for your dog is grooming.

The amount of grooming needed depends on the breed and length of your dog’s fur. If your dog isn’t groomed well, it can cause all sorts of problems in the future. Keeping your dog’s coat in good condition, though, will make your dog a happy pet. The things that come under dog grooming include brushing their fur, bathing your dog, brushing their teeth, and trimming your dog’s nails. There are also lots of dogs that need their coats to be cut during the summer months to keep them from overheating.

You will find that grooming your dog is a fantastic time to bond with your dog too. You can teach the animal such commands as sitting as you groom him/her. When dogs realize from a young age that being groomed is not a painful process, they will allow you to perform the task far more readily. Most dogs enjoy being bathed most of all usually sitting down to allow you to wash them with ease. Giving them a good dog bath is important as it will get rid of any dead skin, dirt, and hair that has come loose. But be sure to purchase special dog shampoo because human shampoo might cause irritation to your dog’s skin.

After the bathing process has finished, expect your dog to have a good shake and stand right back as he does it so as not to get soaked. Ensuring you use a good quality dog nail trimmer and keep them in good condition is just as important as washing or brushing the dog. And if you’re not sure about how to do it, then look for a professional to perform the procedure. As you groom your dog, it is also a good idea to have a look at your dog’s ears and mouth to see that everything is in order or so you can catch any problems while they are still minor. If you spot anything out of the ordinary, take your dog for a trip to the vets to get it checked out.

Many people send their dog away to some kind of doggy parlor to get groomed. And although this might be great for your dog, it does mean that you are both missing out on valuable time to bond with each other. Grooming your dog yourself is a fairly easy task that you can do once every week. Doing so will make your dog feel far better than he/she did before, and after you have gotten into a good habit, grooming will fit nice and smoothly into your weekly routine. If you have any children, they will more than likely want to help too, taking some of the pressure of yourself.

Always keep in mind that your dog a member of the family and will love it when you care for its needs.

Dogs can behave quite erratic at certain periods in their lives and this can be quite a hassle if you are not an experienced dog owner with a lot of patience. They will give you a handful of trouble and they will act out every chance they get. The motives behind such an aggressive behavior are many and they all relate in one way or another to the way they feel. By understanding the reasons that stand behind their anxious behavior and determining how you can change your attitude to better influence the life of your canine, you will be able to be a source of health in his life and he will be one in yours.

When the motives behind your canine’s behavior are unclear to you there are several online materials which can come to your aid and help you solve the problem behind this mystery. Training videos are also available for download from the Internet or can be purchased on DVD. The eBooks and video materials can prove to be a decent starting point for you when you want to get going on the path to becoming a respected dog owner and to have your canine execute your commands wonderfully. The materials will emphasize how you can train your dog and at the same time when you should reward your dog with treats. You can never have enough resources at your disposal when it comes to dealing with a frustrated canine and to changing his behavior to one of a more compliant and obedient pup.

One of the most encountered reasons that support erratic behavior is your dog’s separation anxiety. The canine will regard the owner as the most important person in his life and he will constantly feel the need to be in his presence. Once he will notice you have been ignoring him and you have been absent for quite some time he will begin to feel left out and sadness will overcome him. You should resolve this matter at the earliest time possible to avoid further complications in behavior and aggressiveness.

The canine will take on additional personality traits if your lack of care continues to persist. He will bark, dig all over your yard, bite, scratch and chew the items he finds in his path. Through this type of behavior an owner should understand the canine’s frustration in not understanding what it is expected of him.

The main aspect to keep in mind at all times is the fact that dog training becomes difficult with age, therefore the most suitable time to train your canine is by starting at a fragile age. You should award your canine companion with enough attention so he should feel appreciated and loved while helping him master the basic commands. Always be prompt in praising his accomplishments and be offering him treats as rewards for his hard work. When he fails to execute a command you should not reward him at all and you should encourage him to do better next time.

The canine will have to learn that you are the one setting the rules and he is the one following them. In turn he will begin to regard you as a member of his family and the leader of the pack and he will follow your initiative. The dog is indeed the best friend a man could have and he will act accordingly if taught how.

Canine obedience training can be quite exhausting at times considering the amount of patience the owner should possess. If you are a person that lacks time and patience then you should hand over your canine to a professional trainer which will ensure he becomes a perfect specimen. A professional is the most recommended person to visit when seeking advice on how to work with a dog. They will teach you everything about canine physiology and psychology so you would well distinguish the moments when it is necessary to offer your canine a reward and when it is necessary to encourage him to perform better. Consistency is the key to turning your dull pet into an admirable companion from which you will not part too soon. He will in turn become your friend for life and protect and love you as best as he is able.

It’s recommended that we humans go for a health check-up at least once a year. Our dogs are part of our families, so doesn’t it make sense for Fido to go to the vet at least once a year, too? Taking the time, and spending a few dollars, to take Fido to the vet is an investment in his or her health, as the vet may be able to spot potential illnesses and problems before they have a chance to dramatically affect your pooch. They can never replace a vet’s full check-up, but read on for some ways you can also regularly monitor your pet’s health!

Open Up!

Most dogs won’t exactly be super happy to have you examine their mouths, but take a moment to open your dog’s mouth – his teeth should be mostly white, and there shouldn’t be any sores in his mouth. What color are Fido’s gums? They should be pink, whereas any other colors can be indicative of a problem.

Let Me See Those Eyes and Ears

Check to make sure that your dog’s ears are clean. If your dog has any marks on them or sores inside his ears, be sure to take him to the vet for a closer look. Same goes for your dog’s eyes – your dog should not have discharge coming from his eyes, save for some dog breeds where some clear discharge occurs naturally.

Smooth Skin and Coat

Give your dog a long pet each time he comes in from outside. Not only will he love the attention, but you’ll be able to detect whether he has any prickly grass or thorns in his coat, as well as checking that he isn’t missing any hair or has irritated spots on his skin. Be sure he doesn’t have any clumps of mud or snow in his paws. Lumps can unfortunately develop in dogs, so be sure to check your dog, including the underside of his belly and chest, for any lumps. If you should feel a lump, consult your vet immediately.

Is His Tail Wagging?

You’ll also want to pay attention to your dog’s overall demeanor. Sure, just like a human, there will be days when Fido isn’t as excited as he normally is, but if you notice a downward pattern in your dog’s mood, such as your dog sleeping more than usual or seeming depressed, these are key signs that your dog may be suffering from an illness, and to the vet it is!
