The Herding Group
- The Herding Group, the newest AKC classification created in 1983; its members were formerly members of the Working Group. All breeds share the remarkable ability to control the movement of other animals.
- A extraordinary example is the Border Collie, perhaps one of the quickest and most agile of the group, can drive a herd of cattle to pasture by leaping sideways that looks almost like flying and nipping at their heels.
- The vast majority of Herding dogs, as household pets, never encounter a farm animal. Nevertheless, pure instinct prompts many of these dogs to gently herd their owners, especially the children of the family. If you’ve ever walked a Herding dog off-leash you know what I mean.
- In general, these intelligent dogs make exceptional companions and respond skillfully to training exercises.
